The10th Annual Cherokee Archaeological Symposium is back and will take place at Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort. This September 15th and 16th we hope to have a tremendous turnout to learn about the exciting Archaeological studies related to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) hosts the annual event to garner interest in archaeology and provide information about archaeological projects on and off the Qualla Boundary. The event is a forum for exchanging information on archaeological work that enables tribal members, educators, students, and the general community to better understand the field of archaeology and how it pertains to Cherokee life, history, and culture. Speakers share expertise and provide information on projects and current research. We anticipate an estimated 30 speakers over the two day period.
Miranda Panther, NAGPRA Officer of the THPO stated the symposium is a "... tribally sponsored archaeology event that allows professional archaeologists, federal agencies, and professors who teach in the Southeast to interact with Cherokee tribal and community members and present findings of their work." The THPO staff works collectively to ensure this event is a success and enjoyed by all in attendance. We hope to see you there!
