The Historical Society of Islip Hamlet invites you to take a walk through time to hear the stories of ten persons, famous and infamous, fondly remembered or long forgotten, as told through impersonators in period costume. This walking tour through the Oakwood Cemetery will be enhanced by our guides who will direct each tour. "The Widows" will be accompanying you during your tour. Period appropriate music will greet you at each highlighted gravesite. Tickets to this event also include a beautifully illustrated Guide Booklet. Spend an afternoon with an industrialist who transformed Islip into a popular summer resort while instigating the legendary New York Police Riot. Meet an America's Cup first mate from a time when Islip dominated that most prestigious of sailing events. Just how did a German immigrant meet her fate at the hands of her serial killer polygamist husband? How did a Brooklyn carpenter became a prolific "hangman" when executions were public spectacles? The stories of a Revolutionary War soldier and a Civil War family, of politicians and captains of industry will be told as well. Several new features have been added from our previous Tours, including period music accompanying each impersonator, a tour of the Chapel Mausoleum graced by beautiful Tiffany glass windows and fascinating anecdotes from Oakwood Cemetery's eventful 142 year history.
