Discussion group on the topic of Yama, the first limb of Ashtanga. Particular items to be covered are as follows:
Ahimsa: (non-violence) We treat others with compassion. By seeing ourselves in others, we would never hurt anyone.
Satya: (truthfulness) We choose honesty in our all our interactions.
Asteya: (non-stealing) We take only what is ours.
Brahmacharya: (continence) We honor others as sacred beings by practising balance in our physical relations.
Aparigraha: (non-coveting) Content with what we have, we take only what we need and practice simple living and non-attachment.
What do these five principles mean to you and how can you apply them to your own experience? Do you need any support in these areas?
We will be meeting at (or near) the Trestle Shelter at the Tualatin Community Park. This event takes place around dinner time, so please feel free to bring snacks (for yourself or to share). Weather-depending, we might be on the grass or under a covered area, bring a blanket or a chair just in case.
This class is hosted by Ashtanga Village; a place of spiritual growth for all peoples interested in finding purpose, meaning and belonging; and is founded on the principles of Ashtanga. The eight-part path towards union with the true self, known as Ashtanga, is a challenging and rewarding journey in discovering some of the many mysteries of the universe, including who you are and why you are here. The non-linear path is as follows: 1. Yama, 2. Niyama, 3. Asana, 4. Pranayama, 5. Pratyahara, 6. Dharana, 7. Dhyana, and 8. Samadhi.
These practices are aspirations for everyone, regardless of culture, creed, age or gender. All are welcome!
