A FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENT !INSECT TRACKS AND SIGNS ARE ALL AROUND US BUT OFTEN OVERLOOKEDInsect tracks are among the most encountered of all invertebrate tracks and they are an extremely diverse and interesting group of animals to explore.
Insects are invertebrates - animals without vertebrae. This group also include spiders and scorpions (arachnids), crustaceans, and snails and slugs (gastropods). While an estimated 97% of all animals are invertebrates, their tracks and sign are often overlooked by trackers.
Join Charley Eiseman, naturalist and author of the book 'Tracks ands Signs of Insects and Other Invertebrates', for this easy walk on Distant Hill Nature Trail looking for tracks and signs of insects along the way. You'll be surprised and how many we will find!
Happening the same day from 12-4 PM at Distant Hill Gardens, The Caterpillar Lab will be set up with a hands-on display of beautiful and interesting caterpillars to check out and hold. And we'll collect some of what we find on the Insect Tracking Walk and examine them up close under The Caterpillar Lab's digital microscope. Don't miss seeing the Leaf Miner Caterpillars we are sure to find. They are exceptionally cool to view!
Stay for a few minutes or all afternoon; you and the kiddos are sure to see something new and exciting!PLEASE REGISTER SO WE HAVE AN IDEA OF HOW MANY PEOPLE TO EXPECT This Insect Tracking Walk and The Caterpillar Lab at Distant Hill are both happening in conjunction with an 'Open Garden Weekend'. The events are free with your $10/adult entry to the gardens.
