Safety risks to human lives are another reason. It is near impossible to find workers willing to mine coal these days due to health risks. Despite the OP's efforts two make you believe otherwise, coal is a very expensive way to produce power. Mining, processing, transporting, burning are not an efficient way to make power. In the early days, trains were powered by coal. Coal powered trains were phased out as they gave way to new more efficient technology. The same is happening with coal electricity. Technology has changed and so is the industry. It is not politicians that closed coal power plants. It was the power companies themselves that CHOSE not to rebuild power plants as they aged.
