Description
The Fledgling Beginning Birders Bird-A-Thon team will gather together on September 17th to count birds for conservation science—and all are welcome! Join us at the Birdwalk Coastal Access Trail parking lot in Bodega Bay at 9:30am. Bring $7 for parking if you don't have a Sonoma County Regional Parks Pass. Register at www.pointblue.org/birdathon to officially join the Fledgling team and participate in our fundraiser in this way. (Click on the green register button and select the Fledgling team in the ‘Join a Team’ drop down box.) If you already have a Rich Stallcup Bird-A-Thon team or are participating individually, we still encourage you to join! This family-friendly, wheelchair accessible beginning birder outing is open to all and will include a tutorial for those who want to gather in nature and learn more about birding and conservation science. Please bring your masks and wear them if you are within 6 feet of other attendees. Bird walk leaders will be vaccinated, boosted and masked when closer than 6 feet to others. We'll provide binoculars for those who don't have their own as well as field guides to share. We'll also bring spotting scopes to view birds up close. Wear layers and comfortable walking shoes you don't mind getting dirty if you will be walking. Bring water, hat, and sunscreen. There are ample cafes and restaurants nearby for purchasing beverages or food before or after. There may be an open bathroom or portable bathroom onsite, but not guaranteed. Make a stop before the walk. What is the Bird-A-Thon? Point Blue's 44th annual Rich Stallcup Bird-A-Thon, takes place from September 15–October 15 and is the country’s longest running Bird-A-Thon. Point Blue staff, Board, and supporters form teams and choose a date and time frame to count as many bird species as they can while getting people to sponsor them per bird species or with a flat donation. By participating, you will support Point Blue Conservation Science and our multiple-benefit solutions to environmental problems in California and beyond with a focus on climate change. Learn more at www.pointblue.org. You can use this walk as your Bird-A-Thon or as a skill builder to form your own team and do a longer day of birding to raise money for conservation through Point Blue. Join environmental conservation professional, bird expert, and Sonoma County resident Lishka Arata to learn and have fun doing it. No matter what level you are at, Lishka will help you identify your local birds and teach you ways that you can keep learning on your own.
