'If We Had Not Loved Each Other…': Madam C.J. Walker and the Past, Present and Future of Black Generosity Wrap up Black Philanthropy Month 2022 with an engaging, in-person book-talk, signing and reception. This event will feature Tyrone McKinley Freeman, Ph.D., international award-winning author of Madam C. J. Walker’s Gospel of Giving: Black Women’s Philanthropy During Jim Crow. This event is organized and brought to the community by NGAAP (New Generation of African American Philanthropists) and the Harvey B. About the AuthorTyrone McKinley Freeman, Ph.D. is an award-winning scholar and teacher who serves as Associate Professor of Philanthropic Studies and Director of Undergraduate Programs at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Previously, he was a professional fundraiser and Associate Director of The Fund Raising School where he trained nonprofit leaders around the globe. His research focuses on philanthropy in communities of color and philanthropy in higher education. His latest book is entitled, Madam C.J. Walker’s Gospel of Giving: Black Women’s Philanthropy during Jim Crow (University of Illinois Press, 2020), which won the 2021 Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Skystone Partners Research Prize in Fundraising and Philanthropy. His work has appeared or been cited in The New York Times, O: The Oprah Magazine, USA Today, TIME, Harvard Business Review, Stanford Social Innovation Review, NewsOne, The Conversation, Black Perspectives, Philanthropy Women, Chronicle of Philanthropy, CASE Currents, and Advancing Philanthropy. He is co-author of Race, Gender and Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations (Palgrave MacMillan, 2011).
