Description

National Lighthouse Day is celebrated on August 7th. This day commemorates the establishment of the U.S. Lighthouse Service by President George Washington in 1789. In 1989, President George Bush signed into law a resolution establishing August 7th as National Lighthouse Day. This day is now used to celebrate the history and heritage of lighthouses in the United States. It is also an opportunity to learn more about these important structures and their place in our nation’s history. Lighthouses have played an important role in the history of the United States, serving as a guide for ships navigating along the coastline.Over time, lighthouses became an important part of American culture and history. They served as a source of comfort and hope for those at sea, and their light was a symbol of safety for maritime travelers. On Sunday 8/7 from 10am to 7pm, The Friends of Nobska Light encourage you to visit the public grounds and celebrate the history and heritage of Nobska Point Light. Although the tower will be closed for tours on this day, volunteer lighthouse tour guides will be intermittently available to answer any questions you may have about our beloved lighthouse. Bring a picnic with family and friends to enjoy the vistas of the tower and view of Vineyard Sound, Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands and join in the celebration of Nobska on National Lighthouse Day! #everylighthouseneedsakeeper
