Description

An adage of poetry workshops is that in order to write, you must read. What does that look like for different writers? To what extent does critical reading play a role in their own writing or how they consider the craft? We'll be exploring these questions through the month of August as BOOK MARKS brings local poets together in conversation about reading as a writer. In part 1 of the series, poets Patrycja Humienik & Luther Hughes sit down for a chat in CAM's storefront. This will be an outdoor event with sidewalk seating // bring masks, be vaxxed // snacks & drinks provided! ..... BOOK MARKS series is a playful and casual exploration of craft with & for Seattle's writer community. The series expands on "reading the sealey challenge," a month-long durational performance project where Whitney Bashaw reads a book of poems cover-to-cover out-loud in CAM’s storefront several days a week through August. Meant as a way to play with the experience of reading and to provide a low barrier of entry for people to encounter poetry in surprising ways. Held every august, The Sealey Challenge is a community activity in which participants read a book of poetry each day. about the authors :: Luther Hughes is the author of the debut poetry collection, A Shiver in the Leaves, forthcoming from BOA Editions in September 2022, and the chapbook Touched (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2018), recommended by the American Library Association. He is the founder of Shade Literary Arts, a literary organization for queer writers of color, and co-hosts The Poet Salon podcast. Recipient of the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship and 92Y Discovery Poetry Prize, his writing has been published in American Poetry Review, Paris Review, The Seattle Times, Orion, and more.
