On August 07, 2022 from 1PM - 2PM join us in person at the Visitor and Education Center at Fort Monroe or virtually to learn about the deep history of this historic structure.
Our archivist will be hosting a conversation with the public regarding the history of the Old Point Comfort lighthouse and its significance as a symbol of opportunity and social mobility for women and Black men during the 19th century.
The conversation will highlight one manner in which Freedom’s Fortress offered sustainability to an often-silenced segment of the population while also grappling with examples of prejudice evident in the pre and postbellum United States as exemplified by the lighthouse keepers and their legacies.
