Description
DETROIT — Shri Thanedar won the crowded Democratic primary for state's newly created 13th U.S. Congressional District, according to multiple reports. He beat out eight other Democrats for the win.He will face Republican in Martell Bivings November's general election in a district that leans heavily Democratic.
Thanedar's victory likely means Detroit will be without a Black representative in Congress, despite the fact Detroit is nearly 80 percent Black and all of the other candidates in the primary were Black. The City has been without a Black representative since 1955 when Charles Diggs Jr. took office.
"This race was not about me," Thanedar said in a statement Wednesday. "Michigan's 13th Congressional district is one of the poorest in the country, and I will fight for economic and racial justice in Congress."
