SOMERVILLE, MA — Two firefighters were hospitalized following a three-alarm fire in Somerville early Wednesday. Fire Chief Charles Breen said firefighters responded to a Kensington Avenue home around 2 a.m. and found a heavy fire in the basement, which spread up the rear stairway. Two people were trapped on the second floor and pulled to safety, Breen said. During the rescue, two firefighters were injured and taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. They have since been released and will recover at home, Breen said. Seven more firefighters sustained minor injuries but remained on duty. Four cats were also saved from the home. Three adults and four children have been displaced by the fire, which spread to the upper floors in the walls and ceilings and left the house uninhabitable, Breen said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
