In this workshop, we’ll explore how to use elements of strangeness and surprise to bring new life to your fiction. If you’ve been feeling lately like your writing is stalled or stale, this class will inject new energy and excitement into your creative process. First, we’ll look at dazzling fiction excerpts from Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Franz Kafka, Laura Esquivel, and Roald Dahl, who all use elements of the strange and fantastic to fascinate readers and hold them spellbound. We’ll then explore several writing prompts that help you access offbeat and astonishing story ideas of your own. You’ll also get to connect with a community of inspired writers and learn new techniques for growing your story beginnings into a completed narrative. The class will be held on Zoom.
