Description
The International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastline. The City of Melbourne, in collaboration with Keep Brevard Beautiful and the Ocean Conservancy, invites you to join in for this year's cleanup. Please register through the orange "Register" button to RSVP or call 321-608-5082. We will supply the materials for the event. This is a free event. -City of Melbourne Cleanup Site 1: Cleanup will take place along the bank, on the water and around the park at Ballard Park. Feel free to bring your own vessel if you plan to get litter out of the lagoon. Check-in Site Location: Participants can check-in starting at 8 a.m. at Ballard Park, located at 924 Thomas Barbour Drive, Melbourne, FL 32935. -City of Melbourne Cleanup Site 2: Cleanup will take place in the water on Crane Creek from Rigg's Outpost dock in downtown Melbourne. Please bring kayaks or paddle boards. Kayaks are available to rent from Rigg's Outpost for $10 on the day of the event. Anyone on the dock will need to sign a waiver- this can be done through their website Riggsoutpost.com before hand or they will provide tablets for signing the day of the event. Check-in Site Location: Participants can check-in starting at 8 a.m. at the Riggs Outpost dock at 990 E Melbourne Ave., Melbourne, FL 32901. Recommended Supplies: • Work gloves (bring a pair of gloves with you) • Dress appropriately (the shoreline is covered with boulders, rocks, and potentially dangerous rigid & sharp objects) • Water to keep you hydrated; we will provide water in a large jug but please bring your own water bottle • Food (bring your own snacks) • Sunscreen and bug spray Safety Tips: Review what to do in case of a health emergency (heat exhaustion or heat stroke, a broken bone, etc.) When visiting the site, look for natural and man-made safety hazards, such as rocky areas, highly variable tides, poisonous plants, high-speed roads, power lines, etc. If necessary, dress accordingly, such as wearing long pants or closed-toed shoes. Plan ahead for handling sharp items, including syringes or pieces of broken glass. We recommend disposing of these items in a container with a tight screw lid, such as an empty liquid laundry detergent bottle that you have clearly labeled.
