PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A go-to watering hole, a diner hangout, a line-up of Fifth Avenue boutiques — Park Slope's commercial corridors will look different heading into the New Year. As with the rest of New York City, and the country, the coronavirus pandemic has meant saying goodbye to some neighborhood favorites. 2020 brought a record number of vacancies to Park Slope's main commercial corridor as the pandemic shut down non-essential businesses and sent New Yorkers inside for most of the year. But the closures don't necessarily mark the end for Park Slope's business community. Fundraisers are still in play for many neighborhood spots hoping to survive the year. A total of 32 businesses have shut down on Fifth Avenue in the past eight months, but 37 have opened or are preparing to open, according to the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District and a Wall Street Journal study of the street. The avenue also got a boost as a go-to dining destination thanks to the Open Streets: Restaurant program. New businesses this year include a fish market, a Lebanese restaurant opened by a longtime New York City chef and a new grocery store.
