SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — New York health officials on Wednesday reported 1,212 new coronavirus cases in Suffolk County out of 13,620 tests, for a positivity rate of 8.9 percent. The county has reported more than 25,000 new cases in December alone — roughly 29 percent of the total cases in the county since the pandemic began. The sharp uptick prompted a statement Wednesday from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, who urged residents to keep New Year's celebrations to a minimum as the spread of the virus trends in a "dangerous direction" in the county. "Over the course of the last month, we have watched our positivity rate continue to tick upwards at an alarming rate, breaking 9 percent [Tuesday], and just under 9 percent [Wednesday]," Bellone said. "With New Year's Eve only a few days away, I cannot stress enough the importance of celebrating responsibly and safely. The surge we are continuing to see should make anyone planning to attend a celebration with individuals outside of your household rethink their plans. Staying home and celebrating only with your immediate family is the best bet when it comes to keeping our friends, family, and neighbors healthy. "We knew this holiday season would be challenging, but we are trending in a dangerous direction. We need to slow the spread. Everyone has a part to play. Mask up, practicing social distancing, and limit gatherings."
