Palmetto Tractor Services is looking for operators. Please read below for a summary of this position. The Operator I position’s responsibility is to operate construction heavy equipment and follow job plans/specifications to complete various earthwork and utility installation projects within the assigned schedule and to the highest standard. This position will also fulfill other ancillary duties involved with the general operation of various construction equipment. This includes but is not limited to, shovel work, cutting and coring of concrete/asphalt, repairing and patching concrete and asphalt, various site erosion control maintenance, storm system installation, setting pipe, assembling related appurtenances, installing materials by hand associated with general site construction, as well as various other construction activities dictated by the project needs. This position will assist senior operator, foreman, and superintendent positions in their administrative, supervisory, and operational responsibilities in managing day-to-day operations, installation, repair, and replacement activities for a range of site work activities. This position is expected to take direction and assist other employees in their daily tasks and activities. This position could assume the some or all the duties of another position in the absence of that position. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The Operator I position works under the direction of the Foreman and/or superintendent. GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Administrative: Receive and process direction for daily job activities. Complete daily Equipment, Pre-task Safety, Excavation, and other Daily checks as necessary. Take initiative and ask/seek the next task to complete should you finish your assigned tasks. • Machinery Operation: Operate all heavy equipment like excavators, dozers, front-end loaders, and other related equipment. Manage the machines or equipment in a safe and secure way. Perform periodical safety, maintenance, or servicing checks to ensure proper functioning of the equipment. Perform minor repair works during functioning problems and advise supervisor when machines need major attention. • Safety: Contribute to an environment for your crew to avoid injury or property damage. Perform periodical safety, maintenance, or servicing checks to ensure proper functioning of the equipment. Wear proper PPE for the job and ensure other employees are following suit. Identify unsafe situations and notify your supervisor. Take responsibility for your safety and others. • Technical: Operate equipment to ensure materials are installed/graded/excavated to the highest standard and in accordance with the plans and specifications. Assist in performing general layout for work installations. Install materials as dictated by the contract documents and supervisors. Properly spread and level dirt/stone/gravel to meet compactions requirements. Install storm piping in accordance with the methodology established by manufactures with the supervision of the general superintendent. Develop/master knowledge of elevation and GPS equipment and how to effectively use on the jobsite. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS • Perform work efficiently and utilizing industry standard practices. Seek advice if unsure of proper methodology. • Adapt to changing work conditions/situations to ensure the workday is efficient. This includes encouraging other employees to do the same. • Plan ahead so you can identify potential needs such as fuel, consumables, and proper equipment needed for the upcoming tasks/activities. • Communicate both verbally and written to ensure your duties are understood and your work is performed per industry standards. • Working knowledge of electronic communication and tools. Includes but not limited to: email, web based programs for tracking and reporting, and other basic computer skills. • Maintain a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. • Maintain the ability to get to the jobsite for work. • Maintain the ability to work outside in various weather conditions. • Execute assignments as outlined with the foreman/superintendent to maintain positive production each week. • Lead by example, help others build their knowledge base, and help motivate individuals to get the job done accurately and efficiently.
