Description

UNC Asheville's Economics Department proudly presents an evening with Dr. Miroslav Volf, of Yale Divinity School, to present his most recent project, "Striving for Superiority". This event will take place in the Mullen & Jams Humanities Lecture Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 17, 2022. The evening's lecture will center on the idea that "in many of our activities – from sports, to business, to academia – we strive to be better than others. It is easy to see what the monetary, reputational, and power values are of being better than others, but what is the human value of being better than someone else in one of these endeavors? Are we better as humans if we are better than our neighbors?" In addition to this most recent research, Dr. Volf has written or edited more than 20 books and over 100 scholarly articles. His book Exclusion and Embrace: A Theological Exploration of Identity, Otherness, and Reconciliation won the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in Religion and is ranked as one of Christianity Today’s 100 most important religious books of the 20th century. This lecture is sponsored by the Cary Caperton Owen Distinguished Professorship in Economics, the Carol G. Belk Distinguished Professorship in Humanities, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. This event is free, and open to students, our campus community, and the general public. In order to confirm seating for all guests, we encourage you to register for this event on this Eventbrite listing.
