Description

Thinking of writing a book? Whether you’re contemplating a novel, a memoir, or a collection of stories, embarking on a book-length manuscript of prose can be daunting. We’ll explore some compelling openings and learn how writers (including Pat Conroy) went on to write the book. We’ll also discuss strategies for getting rolling and keeping going. Every participant will also define the shape of the book you want to write and compose an opening. Open to all experience levels. This is an in-person writers workshop, held at the University of South Carolina Beaufort Center for the Arts as part of the Pat Conroy Literary Festival. Limited to 20 participants; $45/person. About our instructor: Valerie Sayers is the author of a collection of stories, The Age of Infidelity, and six novels, including her most recent, The Powers. Who Do You Love and Brain Fever were both named New York Times “Notable Books of the Year, and a film, "Due East," was based on her novels Due East and How I Got Him Back Sayers’s stories, essays, and reviews have appeared widely, in such publications as the New York Times, Washington Post, Commonweal, Zoetrope, and Ploughshares, and have been cited in Best American Short Stories and Best American Essays. Her literary prizes include a National Endowment for the Arts literature fellowship and two Pushcart Prizes for fiction. She is honored to be a member of the South Carolina Academy of Writers.
