The benefit of our Short Story Book Club: If you only read one or two of the stories, you can still meaningfully participate and not worry about spoiling a book you're only halfway through. If you're not wild about one short story between the covers, chances are that you'll find at least one with which you'll fall in love. September's pick is The Best American Short Stories 2021 - a collection of the year's best stories selected by two-time National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward. These stories are poignant reminders of the possibilities of fiction: as you sink into world after world, become character after character, as Ward writes, you "forget yourself, and then, upon surfacing, know yourself and others anew."We will meet in person at our new store location at 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $17 which includes your copy of The Best American Short Stories 2021 to be picked up at Bookstore1 anytime before our meeting. About The Best American Short Stories 2021: Including work by George Saunders, Nicole Krauss, Bryan Washington, Kevin Wilson, Gabriel Bump, and more, the stories in this year's collection offer readers a sense of repair. From a stirring portrait of Rodney King's final days to a surreal video game set in the Middle East, with real consequences, to an indigenous boy's gripping escape from his captors, this collection renders profoundly empathetic depictions of the variety of human experience.
