For recovery I transferred to Rancho Los Amigos for nine months. Against doctor's orders I put on a suit and checked into a hotel in Long Beach where I met Lei and conversation took us to my room. I asked in the morning, “What are you doing later?” “Nothing, why?” “I thought we could fly to Hawaii next,” I said. We took a cab to the mall where I bought diving equipment and then we boarded our flight. Taking no luggage had us walking off the plane to a taxi and checking into our hotel in minutes. After changing into swimming gear, we bought some frozen vegetables and took them to Hanauma Bay. When we got there, I tied some to her waist before dropping a few into the water. This brought fish swarming and she was off shaking bag after bag empty for the next three hours. I saw her crawling out of the water and she said, “Wow that was the best thing I ever did!” This happened in 1987 and I'm dying to hear from you! Doug Miura
