Description

Jon Forshee, Colin McAllister, Mary France compose the Lydian Trio. Their performance, which will include two recent compositions, will highlight the influence of classical Greco-Roman culture on contemporary music. The instrumentation includes electric guitar, tuba, electronic-generated pieces with video, and a replica ancient Greek lyre made by Luthieros in northern Greece. The title of this concert is Nostos (homecoming, return), an important theme in The Odyssey and other epic literature. It also is the title of a work composed by Adam Greene, San Diego, which is on the program and will be performed by guitarist Colin McAllister. Rhapsode of the Meskousing Woods, composed by Jon Forshee, is a tribute to Wisconsin’s Native American roots and landscape. The rhapsode incorporates an audio of Lorine Niedecker’s poetry reading, making a connection between cultures, languages, and time. Rhapsode of the Meskousing Woods will premier at the Aspen Composers’ Conference on August 1st. Colin will perform a piece based on Vergil’s Aeneid with a recitation in Latin with an English translation projected overhead. The concert’s music incorporates readings from The Odyssey, Vergil’s Aeneid, Lorine Niedecker (a Wisconsin poet), Nikos Katazantzakis’ Odyssey, and others. Program pieces connect to each other with themes of the journey, adventure, return, and in the use of ancient Greek musical modes.
