Description
Prototype237 is an experiment in creative co-living in a 5,000 sq. ft former garment warehouse in Paterson, NJ. We draw inspiration from each other and our environment, and use that inspiration to make art, perform, and make a living. There’s something lacking when you go to a museum or gallery and watch art as a spectator. At Prototype, we believe art is most valuable when it touches you and you can touch and experience it. Our residents form the core of our community, bringing together their values, personalities, and skill sets to create an inclusive environment that is both enriching and productive. We exchange perspectives as much as creative processes, growing through each other and each other’s art. Our key holders, who come and go as monthly members, have daily access to the space for co-working and art-making, and bring along their own refreshing energy with each new project created here. The space comes with a proper stage, professional lighting and sound system, wood shop, full kitchen, and freight elevator. Both the city and the landlord know about our commitments to performance, construction, and community events. Come hang. Come make. Come be. Performances by City of Four, Dida Pelled, Joy On Fire, and other special guests. Here's more about the artists! City of Four brings an original brand of modern groove-based jazz, funk, and fusion to music venues across Boston and New England. The band's sound is an amalgamation of the creative minds of its four composers, Mike Caudill (saxophone), Blain Crawford (bass), Steve Wilkinson (drums), and Christian Tremblay (keyboard), who met playing with various groups in Boston. Dida Pelled is a Brooklyn-based, Native Tel-Avivian, whom is widely regarded as the greatest jazz guitarist this side of Mississippi. Pelled's ambitions took shape as a child, when, entranced by bebop, she sequestered herself from the world and resolved to master guitar, later earning a spot in the Israeli Army band before training in the New School on a scholarship to study jazz. She quickly made a name for herself in the New York jazz scene, recording with Jazz masters like Roy Hargrove and Gregory Hutchinson and touring the world. As her jazz star rose, Pelled felt a pull toward classic America songwriting, shifting her direction and redefining her voice. Love of the Tiger, Pelled's upcoming album, is the product of a jazz prodigy gone rogue, it's a love letter to the obscure, weaving across genres, twisting and turning with Pelled's ever-expanding range of musical abilities and interests. Joy on Fire has been featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered last year, and scheduled for a Tiny Desk Concert in 2021, JOY ON FIRE is a sax/bass/drum/vocal rock-jazz quartet that formed in Baltimore and is now based in New Jersey. Their video for “Uh Huh”—a song featured on their 2020 EP vinyl release, Thunderdome, as well as being the opening track on their forthcoming LP, States of America—is an official selection at the Prisma Film Festival in Italy, the LA Rocks Film Festival, and the London Rocks Film Festival. Videos have also been produced for the tracks “Selfies,” “Thunderdome,” and “Hymn part 1”—the song featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered. Previous album releases include: The Complete Book of Bonsai; Fire with Fire; Hymn; and the aforementioned Thunderdome—with States of America due for completion in early 2021. The band has toured the eastern seaboard in support of these releases, from Vermont to New Orleans, and played repeat engagements at venues and festivals such as The Burlington Jazz Fest, The Middle East Café in Boston, Baltimore’s Metro Gallery, and The Asheville Music Hall. Additional releases, Red Wave and Another Adventure in Red, are in the works, and production on two additional videos from the States LP—“Happy Holidays” and “Anger and Decency”—is set to begin in 2021.
