Karthika’s practice involves all aspects of technology law with an emphasis on the protection, acquisition, and monetization of intellectual property. She advises clients on patent and transactional matters in the life sciences sector across a wide range of technologies, such as vaccines, small molecule pharmaceuticals, medical devices, biologics, software, and research tools. She has a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas and a JD from the University of Houston Law Center. She leverages her background in scientific research and technology transfer to help clients meet their business objectives at every stage of product development. She has developed commercialization strategies for several technologies, and participated in the structuring and financing of six startup companies for various pharmaceutical, medical device, and medical informatics products. Karthika is the President-Elect of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) USA & Canada and has served on the LES board since 2019. JEFFREY WHITTLE, JD, MBA Jeffrey Whittle provides 30 years of legal experience to clients in the energy and high-tech industries. He advises on strategic and complex technology transactions, cross-border and national mergers & acquisitions, licensing, patent protection, portfolio analysis, and other contentious and transactional intellectual property matters including inter partes re-examinations, post-grant reviews and derivation proceedings, among other disputed cases. Mr. Whittle is co-head of Womble Bond Dickinson’s energy and natural resources industry sector, head of the energy IP sub-sector, and serves as managing partner of the firm’s Houston office. He has been recognized by Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America, The WIPR Leaders and Client Choice, among others, for his outstanding work and career as well as his contributions to law, technology and intellectual property. Mr. Whittle was awarded the Texas Trailblazer Award as a Texas lawyer in 2019; won the Frank Barnes Award for Licensing Executives Society (LES) USA/Canada in 2019; and was named Global IP Attorney of the Year by Legal Era in 2018. Mr. Whittle also recently served on the International Advisory Board for the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) 2019–2021. Mr. Whittle is the past president and chair of LES for the United States and Canada (2015–2016) and served on the LES board for over seven years. He currently serves as the co-chair of the Americas committee for Licensing Executives Society International. He is also the 2022 chair and president of Certified License Professionals, Inc., a licensing certifying professional society. Mr. Whittle is a highly sought-after speaker and author – nationally and internationally – on various intellectual property, licensing and technology topics. Special Guest MICHAEL L. METZKER, PHD An innovator for 30 years, Dr. Metzker has focused his research in three areas: next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, sequence variation in diabetes, and HIV-1 transmission between individuals. He started his first company, LaserGen, Inc. in 2002. He has served as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Chemistry at Rice University. Dr. Metzker has served as an expert witness for several HIV criminal cases, presenting a breakthrough method of phylogenetic analysis of HIV-1 DNA sequences. During his career, he has held senior-level research positions with Merck Research Laboratories and Applied Biosystems (now Thermo Fisher). He received his B.S. from the University of California at Davis (1984) and his Ph.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX (1996). Breakfast will be provided.
