What A Year! The 2020 Connecticut Recap 2020, in one word, was unexpected. From beginning to end, this year has been throwing surprise after surprise at us and we're told to just deal with it. Starting the year off with a global pandemic, the year only got crazier from there, with major events occurring one after another. As we look more locally, Connecticut also saw many significant happenings, stealing headlines from around the state.  As we end the year 2020, let’s look back at some of these crashing events that occurred throughout the state. COVID-19 in Connecticut Connecticut saw its first positive coronavirus case on March 8th. A day later, the second positive case in Connecticut was confirmed, and on March 10th, Governor Lamont declared Connecticut a state of public health emergency. March 13th, all the schools closed. March 20th, non-essential businesses were ordered to close. And from there, everything seemed to go down hill. Although Connecticut had a better handle on containing the virus than other states, 2020 ended with about 160,000 confirmed cases and almost 6,000 confirmed deaths in the state. Also throughout the year, Connecticut began the process of slowly reopening everything. Phase three, originally supposed to be enacted in July, was postponed until October, and then modified to Phase 2.1 in November because of new outbreaks. On December 14th the first coronavirus vaccine in the state was administered to Connecticut healthcare workers. Four days later, nursing home residents were vaccinated, and currently the state is in the process of administering vaccinations to Connecticut residents. Even though much of this year was looking down in terms of the pandemic, 2021 brings new hopes with the new vaccination. Police Brutality Bill After the death of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum, with protests and rallies springing up all around the world. Encouraged by this, Connecticut passed the Police Accountability Bill this past year in July. The goal of this bill is to reform police across the state, requiring policemen to wear body cameras at all times, banning the chokehold position, and creating new investigation procedures to look into police using deadly force. The controversy surrounding the bill caused it to be debated thoroughly across the state, but the bill was passed with a 21-15 majority in the state Senate. Making big headlines with the passing, the hope is that the new regulation will oversee police and law enforcement who use their power recklessly and dangerously, protecting those who may become victims. Tropical Storm Isaias Another event that shook up the state was tropical storm Isaias. Hitting the state on August 4th, the storm was stronger than most expected. With high wind gusts, many trees and power outages occurred throughout the state. These power outages lasted longer than usual, with some residents having no power even a week after the storm. As power companies such as Eversource and United Illuminating worked hard to restore power after Isaias, Connecticut was in a bit of a blackout for days following the storm. Ending 2020, this year feels like a dream. With all that happened both locally and globally, it’s fair to say that everything was unprecedented. As we move forward into 2021, let's welcome the new year filled with hope for a better, and maybe more typical year without too many surprises.  From all of us at 3-D Bail Bonds New Haven, we wish you a Happy new Year!
