CHARLOTTE HILL O’NEAL aka Mama C aka Iya Osotunde Fasuyi is an internationally known artist and community activist. Her performing talents and poetry have been showcased on stage, television and radio during the annual UAACC HEAL THE COMMUNITY TOURS and in cities across Africa, Asia and the U.S. Her love of all things ‘art’ has been well documented in films, books and documentaries. including Mama C: Urban Warrior in the African Bush by Dr. Joanne Hershfield. A talented musician, Mama C plays the nyatiti and obokano, traditional African eight string lyres from Kenya and kamalen ngoni, a 12 string traditional harp originating in Mali. She has four albums of original music and poetry. Mama C was a participant in a Writers Residency in Shanghai where she was a featured poet at the Hangzhou China Poetry Festival. The Poetry Africa tour took her to Cape Town; Zimbabwe; Malawi and Durban. She was also a delegate to the EcoSocialist International gathering in Venezuela. Born in Kansas City, Kansas she has lived in Tanzania since 1972 with her husband Pete O’Neal, founder and former Chairman of the Kansas City Chapter of the Black Panther Party. In 1991, they co-founded the United African Alliance Community Center (UAACC) providing programs and projects for the enrichment of the Arusha community. Mama C is presently working on her memoirs.
