Cydney Ross will lead a hike for artists, writers, and anyone interested in learning more about native plants at Burr Oak Woods Bethany Falls Trail. On your way, you'll see several ecosystems, including restored woodlands, savannah, and native prairie plantings, as well as some beautiful rock formations. There will be places to stop and draw or write, so bring your sketchbook, as well as your lunch if you'd like to have a picnic at the end of the hike. The group hike will depart promptly at 9:30 a.m. from the Bethany Falls Trailhead. Location: Meet at Bethany Falls Trailhead, at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs, MO 64015. The Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area is a 1,071-acre property located 21 miles east of Kansas City in Blue Springs, MO, and just north of Interstate 70. Established in 1977, the site provides public access to unique wildlife viewing and learning experiences, and it is well known for its trail system and Nature Center. Features of the area included steep forest hillsides, Burr Oak Creek, large limestone boulders and outcrops, and prairie and woodland restoration sites. Directions: From Interstate 70 (I-70) take Exit 20 for MO-7 Highway at Blue Springs and turn north to travel on MO-7 Highway for 1.10 miles, then turn west on NW Park Road for 1 mile, past the Visitors Center to end at a small parking lot with a picnic shelter and bathroom at the trailhead. Hike difficulty: 1.33 miles, easy to moderate elevation changes, with gravel, dirt, and wood chip path. What to bring: sketchbook, something to draw or write with, comfortable shoes, water, bug spray, and you can leave lunch in your car if you would like to join a picnic at the end of the hike. Cydney Ross is an artist working with ceramics and mixed media, and a Native Plant Specialist at the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center. Ross was raised throughout the Greater Kansas City area, and has set down roots in Kansas City, Missouri with her two cats. She earned a BFA in ceramics from Kansas City Art Institute in 2013. Her endless curiosity for wildlife, stewardship for the earth, and professional background in fine arts has led her to pursue a new chapter in her life that merges these passions. Ross’s lifelong goal is to instill passion and curiosity towards nature while communicating the urgency of climate change and other environmental issues at large. Artist Hike with Cydney Ross is organized by Kiosk Gallery in conjunction with Site Three, a group exhibition and collaborative project with the H&R Block Artspace featuring participating artists invited by six Kansas City-based artist-run spaces including Beco Gallery, The Ekru Project, Kiosk Gallery, plug, Sapien Gallery, and Troost Gardens. Site Three is currently on view at the Artspace July 24-September 10, 2022.
