Description

Sisters Mary Ida Mann Cady and Jessie Ellen Mann grew up in Concord, Michigan, at the turn of the 20th Century, spending most of their lives in the big yellow house on Hanover Street. In 1970, the sisters gave their home and its contents to the State of Michigan to serve as a museum – Mann House. In commemoration of the Mann sisters, the Michigan History Center, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, holds a conference dedicated to examining the role of women through an aspect of the sisters’ lives. This year’s conference theme centers on the role of faith in the lives of Mary Ida and Jessie and that of other women in their small rural community. The Mann sisters were brought up in the First Presbyterian Church of Concord, where Jessie became an elder in her later years. Featured presenters at this year’s conference include Elona Street-Stewart, Co-Moderator, 224th General Assembly (2020) of the Presbyterian Church in America, and Rev. Carol Bodeau, a native of Concord who now lives in Tennessee. Bodeau has done extensive research on the First Universalist Church of Concord. The daylong program will include histories of Concord’s local churches, focused on the role of women, and tours of Concord’s historic churches.
