Wander Wilmot: Mushrooms

Other

Description

Many of us have been taught to avoid wild mushrooms because of their potential toxicity. But mushrooms are far more than just edible or poisonous. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungi that, through a multitude of beneficial interactions, build the ground we walk on. Scientists are researching whether mushrooms can clean up oil spills and break down other environmental hazards such as polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). Mushroom “leather” may one day be the material from which your shoes are made. Maynard Wheeler, local mushroom enthusiast, will introduce participants to identifying local mushroom species with a presentation at the WCA Red Barn. The group will then travel to the mushroom hunt location (TBD). Guests are encouraged to bring a magnifying glass, mushroom guidebook, camera, pencil and paper. Drinking water and bug repellant are also encouraged. Collected mushrooms are for identification purposes only and may not be removed from the property.
