CRANSTON, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Health reported 995 new COVID-19 infections and 17 deaths in Wednesday's data and noted that over 17,000 residents have now received the first dose of the vaccine. Wednesday's data brings the total number of COVID-19 cases statewide to 87,949 and the total number of deaths to 1,777. The state administered 13,060 tests on Tuesday and currently has a daily positivity rate of 7.6%. As of Dec. 30, 426 COVID-19 patients remain hospitalized, with 61 in the ICU and 47 using ventilators. Central Falls residents began receiving their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday after health officials announced on Tuesday that communities hardest hit by the virus would be included in Phase 1 of the vaccine distribution plan.
