SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — California Highway Patrol officers in Santa Cruz County and across the state will be out in full force to look for intoxicated drivers over the holiday weekend. Extra CHP officers will hit the streets 6 p.m. Thursday until midnight Monday, CHP said in a news release. Some 580 drug recognition specialists will be available. Around the same time a year ago, three people died in crashes and CHP arrested 491 people on suspicion of DUI. All of this was in a 30-hour time period. "Heading into the new year, the mission of the CHP is unchanged to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security," said CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray in the news release. "Together, with the public's commitment to safe and sober driving, our officers will continue to work to make California's roadways safe for all who use them." CHP said it is working with nine Western U.S. state patrols and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration as part of a "Drive High, get a DUI" campaign.
