Description

The Southern Utah Sewing and Textiles Conference offers two days of hands-on sewing geared toward Family and Consumer Science educators, 4-H leaders/volunteers, and sewing enthusiasts throughout the community. Participants will receive instruction while making fun projects such as an appliqued pin cushion, an embroidered zipper pouch, a dye sublimated tote bag, an "under the machine" organizer mat, and other exciting creations including an activity to help incorporate computer science and STEM concepts in a sewing project. We will also be working on a service project for the Stitching Hearts Worldwide program. We will make quilt tops using 10 inch squares to donate while learning a few tips and tricks for speed sewing.(This is a great opportunity to use some of your fabric stash - if you have fabric that needs a new home, bring it with you and we can help cut it into 10 " squares, or you can cut it before you arrive. We will have fabric to use for this project at the conference but we are just looking for ways to help if you are trying to downsize your fabric stash.) Teachers: The State Office of Education approved 16 re-licensure points for this conference. The conference features keynote speaker and project presenter Carol Day Gordon, an accomplished costume designer, quilter and embroiderer. Carol will discuss the process of using wool from shearing the sheep to making beautiful projects. She will share some of her amazing work and guide participants through a felted wool project of their own. Join us for two fun-filled days of inspiration, motivation, education, personal satisfaction, and the opportunity to meet other sewing enthusiasts. You might even win an awesome door prize from one of our many sponsors! Fee includes materials for all of the projects, lunch each day, swag bag, and hours of fun and friendship! Dates and Times: Tuesday, September 20, 9:00am - 5:15pm, doors open at 8:30am (Lunch is included.) Wednesday, September 21, 8:00am - 5:15 pm (Lunch is included.) Each participant must bring a sewing machine and basic sewing supplies (scissors, thread, seam gauge, etc.). We will have several irons and ironing boards available, but it you have an iron and portable ironing board you can bring, that would be helpful. If you have questions, please reach out to Andrea Schmutz at 435-634-5706 or [email protected]. You will make seven projects and learn a variety of skills (or refresh and hone skills). Projects include: wool applique and embroidered pin cushion, 10" square baskets and other scrapbusting ideas, under the machine sewing organizer, dye sublimation and tote bag, 10" square quilt (service project), fabric pixel art (how to incorporate STEM in a sewing project), embroidered zipper purse. BONUS project: Join in some fun by designing and making your own mini witch's hat before coming to the conference. Bring your decorated witch's hat to the first day of sewing conference (Sept 20, 2022) and you will be entered to win a spooktacular prize. Use your favorite Mini Witch's Hat pattern or find a free pattern here (Print pages 3 & 4 make the medium size hat): https://www.fleecefun.com/diy-mini-witch-hat-no-sew-free-pdf-and-svg/ COVID accommodations: The conference will be in the Grafton Exhibit Hall where we will have ample space for proper social distancing.
