We are looking for someone to maintain the yard, flowerbeds, and vegetable garden at our 2.5 acre private residence. An ideal candidate is great with plants, likes working outside, and enjoys working independently. Duties - - Mow, trim, and edge grass; - Maintain flower beds including weed removal, trimming, pruning, and watering; - Choose, purchase and install new plants on an as-needed basis; - Removal of leaves and general yard debris including small branches, trash and pet waste; - Design, implementation, and maintenance of a vegetable garden; - Maintenance of compost bins and other systems to improve self sufficiency and reduce environmental impact; - Develop monthly and yearly budget, find cost effective solutions and reduce waste; - Develop monthly and yearly schedules in order to ensure execution of projects and seasonal maintenance; - Coordinate and schedule outside contractors when necessary, for example tree trimming or sprinkler repair - Prepare for inclement weather including ice storms, thunderstorms and extreme heat; - Critter prevention; - Organize and maintain tools and supplies used; - Use fertilizers, pest preventatives and other treatments. (Gardener will ensure these are properly stored, and disposed of to prevent harm to pets and wildlife on property); - Help with setup/teardown for events with an outdoor component Qualifications - Common Sense; Ability to work by yourself; Problem-Solver; Self-Starter - Ability to work outside in various temperatures; - Job requires strenuous activity including but not limited to standing for long periods of time, bending, lifting; - Knowledge of a variety of plants, flowers, trees, shrubs, bushes, herbs; - Ability to follow safety instructions; - Knowledge of fertilizers & pest preventatives; - Ability to catalog and maintain records; - Ability to operate and use garden machinery and tools including but not limited to rideable lawn mower, push lawn mower, weed eater, edgers, leaf blower/vacuum, lawn spreader, lawn aerator. These skills are a plus but not necessary: - Knowledge of native pollinators; - Knowledge of native and low-water plant species; - Knowledge of eco-friendly gardening practices; - Knowledge of vegetable gardening; - Knowledge of tropical plants - Knowledge of fruit trees, including citrus - Landscape design experience (Portfolios are a plus); - Master Gardener certification and/or educational experience in horticulture - Hippie, Eco-Nut or Similar - Handy - painting, hanging curtains, light repairs, etc. Small jobs for bad weather days. This position is part time to full time, and you create your own schedule based on weather conditions & needs of properties. This position offers opportunities for raises and advancement. We may also cover costs of relevant coursework.
