Description
The USS North Carolina, was the lead ship of a class of 35,000-ton battleships, was built at the New York Navy Yard. When commissioned in April 1941, she was the first new battleship to join the fleet in nearly two decades. The USS North Carolina went to the Pacific in June 1942 and took part in the Guadalcanal campaign during the rest of that year and some of 1943, covering the initial landings there and participating in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in August 1942. She was damaged by a Japanese submarine torpedo on 15 September, in an attack that also fatally damaged USS Wasp (CV-7) but returned to the Solomons combat zone after a few months' repairs. n November 1943, North Carolina assisted in capturing enemy positions in the Gilbert Islands. This began a pattern of operations for her that lasted for the rest of World War II: serving in the anti-aircraft screen of aircraft carrier task forces and occasionally using her heavy guns to bombard Japanese-held islands. In these roles, during 1944 she was involved in the Marshalls operation in January-February, attacks on Central Pacific targets through the late winter and spring, the Marianas invasion and Battle of Philippine Sea in June, and Western Pacific carrier strikes in November and December. North Carolina continued her Western Pacific activities in 1945, participating in the invasions of Iwo Jima in February and Okinawa in March and April. The battleship also screened carriers on raids throughout the combat zone, including attacks on the Japanese home islands. She was off Japan in August and September, during the weeks just before and after that nation's surrender. North Carolina returned to the United States in October 1945 and operated in the Atlantic until she was inactivated in 1946. Decommissioned in June 1947, she was part of the "mothball" fleet until stricken from the navy list in June 1960. The following year, North Carolina was transferred to the State of North Carolina to become a memorial and museum at Wilmington, where she remains to this day. North Carolina has seen a lot of action back in its hey-day! Some of her accolades include: Keel laid October 27, 1937, New York Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York First battleship to be constructed in sixteen years and first of 10 fast battleships. Launched June 13, 1940 The world’s greatest sea weapon was commissioned on April 9, 1941. Armament included nine 16-inch/45 caliber guns in three turrets, twenty 5-inch/38 caliber guns in ten twin mounts and sixty 40-mm/56 caliber guns in fifteen quadruple mounts. She could carry144 commissioned officers and 2,195 enlisted men, including 86 Marines. During World War II, NORTH CAROLINA participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations and earned 15 battle stars. Battle of the Eastern Solomons, August 1942. The Battleship’s anti-aircraft barrage helped save the carrier ENTERPRISE, thereby establishing the primary role of the fast battleship as protector of aircraft carriers. One of her Kingfisher pilots performed heroically during the strike on Truk when she rescued ten downed Navy aviators on 30 April 1944. In all, NORTH CAROLINA carried out nine shore bombardments, sank an enemy troopship, destroyed at least 24 enemy aircraft, and assisted in shooting down many more. Although Japanese radio announcements claimed six times that NORTH CAROLINA had been sunk, she survived many close calls and near misses with one hit when a Japanese torpedo slammed into the Battleship’s hull on 15 September 1942. A quick response on the part of the crew allowed the mighty ship to keep up with the fleet. By war’s end, the Ship lost ten men killed in action and 67 wounded. BUT IS THE USS NORTH CAROLINA HAUNTED? Aside from being the most decorated battleship from WW II, The USS NORTH CAROLINA is also considered the most haunted in North Carolina!
