Martinez Installs Sustainable 'Bigbelly' Recycling, Trash Bins

MARTINEZ, CA — As part of a project to clean up public spaces and "reduce the carbon footprint" of trash collection, Martinez install three automated recycling and landfill waste stations. Dubbed "Bigbelly" stations, officials hope the project will improve sanitation and reduce litter. The three Bigbellies are situated at the intersections of Main at Castro, Main at Estudillo and Main at Ferry, city officials announced Dec. 21. Each station is equipped with solar panels to power compactors and wireless technology which reports capacity status to the phones and computers of Public Works staff. "These technologies triple the capacity of each waste receptacle (from 50 gallons to 150 gallons) and also reduce the carbon footprint of trash collection through fewer trash pickups (less truck usage) and fewer recyclables going to the landfill," officials wrote in a news release. Each Bigbelly also offers a space for decals or posters, affording locals the opportunity to advertise in the space or for local artists to showcase their work. If the pilot project is deemed a success and is well-received by the public, the city may consider implementing more of these stations downtown and in city parks.
