Description

Join us for a very special evening with Gabino Iglesias presenting his incendiary, panoramic new novel THE DEVIL TAKES YOU HOME, THE DEVIL TAKES YOU HOME is first and foremost a thriller but it’s also, as Gabino coined it, a “barrio noir” (a genre he created to bring together horror, noir, and magical realism without having to explain it every time -- This is bilingual, political, multicultural, #OwnVoices fiction). Gabino’s work has always centered around his own personal fears and worries. He’s lived in the US since 2008 and hasn’t had health insurance for over half of that time, and in 2020 at the onset of the pandemic, he was suddenly let go from his job as a high school English teacher – unemployed, again without health insurance, and just trying to stay afloat. He was in the early stages of writing what would become THE DEVIL TAKES YOU HOME, and realized this might be his one shot to pursue writing fulltime. Writing this book allowed him to explore loss, grief, and desperation while also tackling the issues that he says affect him the most: poverty and racism. Ultimately, it was also a way of bringing horror and crime fiction together and showing that both genres share a heart: good people going through awful circumstances. As Gabino says, “I want people to see the Other in this book and to feel empathy for someone doing bad things. I also want to show how awful our healthcare system is and shine a light on the millions of folks who, like me, live paycheck to paycheck.”
