Description

Section 3 of the Walking City Trail is where dense urban infrastructure and wild greenery collide in surprising ways. It also includes a partial traverse of Frederick Law Olmsted's Emerald Necklace linear park system: one of America's oldest and most epic urban trails. We'll kick off this guided hike at the Jamaica Pond Boat House in Jamaica Plain and from there, we'll spend the morning journeying through the following Boston green spaces: - Jamaica Pond and Pinebank Promontory - Olmsted Park - Nira Rock Urban Wild - McLaughlin Woods and Parker Hilltop Urban Wild - Kevin W. Fitzgerald Park (aka Puddingstone Park) - The Riverway - The Fens and Fenway Victory Gardens Along the way, we'll stop for food and bathoom breaks, and the hike will conclude at the Mass. Ave entrance to Esplanade Park on the Charles River—serviced by the MBTA's 1 Bus, and a relatively short walk from the Hynes Convention Center Green Line station. Please note that this section of the Walking City Trail includes climbing and descending several sets of stairs: especially when the trail climbs over Parker Hill to reach Longwood medical area. Admission to the hike is free, because times are tough and we all need escapes. But if you're able to make a donation, any amount you can manage is appreciated and the proceeds will go toward covering the Walking City Trail website production costs and expanding trail resources in the months ahead. This hike is a rain-or-shine event, in the spirit of hiking! Unless we're talking dangerous weather events like extreme heat or a hurricane, in which case the hike will be rescheduled and refunds will be issued to anyone who had already registered for the hike.
