Description
Speaker’s Corner is a gathering of voices, between both sexes, in celebration of our right to free speech. Both sexes are welcome.
Speaker’s Corner traditionally took place in Hyde Park, London United Kingdom starting in the mid-1800s despite no laws granting ‘free speech at the time'.
The first official Speaker’s Corner outside of London took place in Nottingham in 2009 and venues exercising free speech have been observed the world over in countries such as Australia, Canada, Italy, Malaysia, and Singapore as early as the late 1800s with the first known US Speaker’s Corner held in Cleveland, Ohio, 1908.
Inhabitants of the US have Free Speech protections entitled by the First Amendment.
To respect the time and grant equal ability to all willing participants, speakers are encouraged to use the full 3-5 minutes and speak to the purpose of presence: Speaking up with and for our global sisters in the US and UK, voicing solidarity and protection of rights for women and children.
