Description

Capaces Leadership Institute and Oregon's Farmworker Movement are in a very exciting time of expanding our Anahuac program to its own Anahuac Farm located in our beautiful Mid-Willamette Valley on 60 acres of certified-organic land in Turner, OR. Anahuac is a community centered program that offers traditional education in agriculture, culinary and cultural arts, traditional wellness and Indigenous languages. Our work aims to empower our Indigenous communities of America, in the dominant culture known as farmworkers, whose labor has been exploited throughout the food system. We are here to sow seeds of sovereignty with organic cultivation of our milpa (corn, squash and beans) and rescue our relationships with our traditional plants and herbs. We successfully closed the land on June 24, 2022! This is a historic accomplishment for our Capaces/ Anahuac team, Oregon's Farmworker Movement and our Indigenous Communities of America! We invite you to join us for an in-person House Party hosted by Beth & Nina Freelander on Wednesday, August 24 from 6:30 PM-8:00 PM at 406 McKinley St SE Salem, OR 97302. Learn more about how you can support this iconic undertaking and what's to come for the Anahuac Farm! The Anahuac Farm is an extension and evolution of Oregon's Farmworker Immigrant Movement which is approaching 50 years of struggle and progress. Our communities have worked in Oregon's agricultural lands for generations. Oftentimes, the land has been a battleground in our plight to bring dignity and justice to our farmworkers. Overall, Indigenous communities of America have been essential to our food system and agricultural labor force in the U.S. and Canada since the Bracero Program. However, our communities have not experienced the fruit of their labor, but rather labor exploitation. The Anahuac Farm will offer a centralized location in the Willamette Valley for our Indigenous community and Oregon’s Farmworker Immigrant Movement to return to their center, connect with Mother Earth, and reawaken their ancestral wealth--our gift Oregon. COVID-19 Precautions: This will be an outdoor event. Please don't attend if you are experiencing any symptoms such as sore throat, cough, fever or chills. To limit the spread of COVID we are also requesting that everyone take a rapid test and test negative within 48 hours before the event. You can take a home test (reimbursable by insurance) or book a free rapid test at a curative location. Thank you for helping us create as safe a space as possible!
