Join Buncombe County Soil and Water Educators for WILD Explorations this summer! These outdoor education experiences are FREE and are for middle and high school students. Part service learning, part experiential education, participants will walk away with an appreciation for the Buncombe’s natural wonders. Events are either on-site at the Buncombe County Soil and Water Office (49 Mt. Carmel Rd. 28806) OR no-cost transportation will be provided starting from the same location. Contact Rose Wall and Jen Knight for more details: [email protected] Service Learning: Invasive Species Removal in Bog Forest Want to help restore a unique forest habitat? Join us as we partner with Mountain True Ecologist Bob Gale to remove invasive Japanese stiltgrass from a bog forest in the Bent Creek Area off the Blue Ridge Parkway. This project is hand-pulling only, no herbicides will be used. Thursday, August 6, 9:15 a.m. -1:00 p.m.; no-cost transportation provided from 49 Mt. Carmel Rd.; To bring: water, snacks, weather appropriate clothing, sunscreen/bug spray Douglas Falls Hike: Join us on a 5 mile hike in the Pisgah National Forest at Big Ivy. Educators and naturalists, Jen Knight and Rose Wall, will point out the many wonders of forest including plants, wildlife, water and geology. The halfway point of this out and back trail is Douglas Falls where we plan to rest, picnic and explore! We will take a slow to moderate pace, but participants for this event should be able to hike over moderately rough terrain for a distance of 5 miles.
