Transmission Rebuild + Auto Work

Description
2001 Toyota Echo 5 speed. 1.5L. 168K. Owner for 6 years. Runs great. Wanting transmission rebuild for: 2 to 3rd shift difficult (synchro's) (problem existed since I bought it.) Difficulty shifting in wintertime (cold) Unsure if clutch needs replacement. Has never slipped. I keep my cars for a long time and slowly repair things issue by issue. This is obviously a huge item. Looking to try a short-throw shifter as well. Interested in talking ideas on performance and MPG, and purchasing parts. The transmission is the main item, with other "wishes" to be perhaps accomplished. If not for transmission, I may keep you in the "rolodex" for other repairs. 1988 Honda Civic Hatchback 5 speed. 1.5L. 158K. Owner 12 years. Runs great. I may get the Honda's transmission rebuilt too. Toyota is first on the list. Honda's trans problems: rough/shakey mating clutch to trans (?). Too much play in clutch-trans (?). Very sensitive clutch grab with transmission, making it rough, especially 2nd gear clutch pedal release. 1st gear occasional problems with putting shifter in. Occasional 3rd gear difficulty going in. Reverse shows occasional grind if shifter in too quickly. Clutch replaced (2x in last three years). -And since when did Craiglist charge money to post an ad? Well I hope I get some contacts from this. I am looking for a professional mechanic with a somewhat professional set-up at their home, etc. I previously went to a mechanic who did work at his home as well, but I think my cars were just too old for him thesedays! I need a mechanic who will do the work and not be afraid to wait on parts, charge me, etc. I rather pay more (well maybe not what a big shop wants) than have the car back and the repair does not hold up. One mechanic replaced the clutch on my car, and in only three years and about 10,000 miles I had to have it replaced again for double by a professional shop! The at-home mechanic did not install it correctly and the clutch components actually seized on each other. I keep my cars for a long time... In newspapers just a few years ago I used to read ads for "Trans Rebuilds" starting at $1,000. Not sure what they cost now. Some transmission shops won't even do rebuilds. **I'm only getting around to asking/investigating shops on prices. This is a "Summer/Fall project." I am not getting anything done this week, or month, just yet. No hurry. Step-by-step. If you want a car in and out, this may not be a good fit. I have other repairs that may need to be added into things, which requires parts to be waited on. Thanks for reading, Ryan
