It’s hard to believe the album isn't a soundtrack to another world. You find yourself picturing it: a moonlit-gilded diorama of Draut’s dreams and memories. Growing up, Draut would wake in the mornings to her parents blasting Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark or Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Schmilsson, dancing around the living room, and riling the dogs. At school in Athens, Georgia, Draut studied classical voice, singing in countless recitals and operas; after five years of fruitful and intensive classical music performance, she found a Lowrey Magic Genie™ electric organ at the thrift store. Enchanted by its sound, she sat down for the first time to write songs of her own: the songs that would become Diving Rings. Synthesizing her lifelong love of catchy melodies, unusual song structure and cinematic story-telling, she metamorphosed the project into a series of cohesive vignettes. In April of 2022, Night Palace released their debut record Diving Rings, out on Park the Van. The earworm singles in Diving Ring’s braided, dream-like suites might be found on a playlist among Broadcast, Alvvays, Vashti Bunyan’s Just Another Diamond Day and Mort Garson’s Plantasia. Night Palace has always been a project in collaboration with their neighbors. Before recording Diving Rings, they played zine release parties, bookstores, local fashion shows, and any place where friends gathered to alchemize their love for each other into tangible shifts in the world around them. With Draut's voice softly glowing at the core of the music, the Night Palace live ensemble features a carousel of collaborators, including Zack Milster (Locate S1), JoJo Glidewell (of Montreal), Hampus Ohman-Frolund (Jens Lekman, Black Kids), William Kissane, Jack Blauvelt, Paul Stevens, and often various friends on woodwinds and strings.
