Begun as an acoustic act formed around the songwriting nucleus of Chris Conner and Ryan Goforth, with Herbie Jeffcoat on lead guitar and Bob Hylton, Cale Hernandez, Les Hall and more among the band’s members over the years, Sourwood Honey quickly became a top draw in venues across the southeast, playing a singular brand of country-rock fusion that saw them lumped in, somewhat unfairly, with the jam band craze of the era. Instead of endless, pointless soloing, however, the music of Sourwood Honey was always centered around the songs of Conner and Goforth. Over several indie releases they would produce fan favorites such as “All My Relations,” “Never Said,” “Follow Me Down,” and more. Conner’s timeless, lived-in voice was the perfect delivery system for the band’s mixture of country twang and blue-eyed soul. As a live act the band mixed their increasingly impressive original songs with covers of Bob Dylan, The Waterboys, Dire Straits, John Prine, and Taj Mahal, a range that reveals the musical dexterity of the band members. Brian Conner has lived with the legacy of Sourwood Honey since he was a teenager watching his older brother Chris, and he is quick to credit them with helping to spur his own musical career with the rock band Villa*Nova. “Sourwood’s music and band members are ultimately the reason I started playing music,” Conner says. “They had their own thing going, it was successful and they didn’t care who didn’t understand it, they just embraced and befriended the ones who did.” Chris Conner would go on to form the incendiary country-rock outfit The South for a time, before a lung cancer diagnosis in early 2007. The music community gathered in support with fundraisers, benefit shows, and more; Chris would succumb to the disease in November of that year. A lasting legacy of his life’s work in music is the Christopher Conner Foundation, which provides scholarships for student musicians, free instruments from donations, and more music related work in the community. In 2017, the 10th anniversary of Chris’ passing provided an opportunity for Brian to put something together for the Conner Foundation gala, and the Sourwood Honey Tribute Band was born. Featuring original members Jeffcoat, Hylton, and Shane Conner, with Brian singing and playing his late brother Chris’ parts, the group was well-received by old fans and gave those who might not have seen the original group in its prime a taste of what they missed out on. Since then, the group has reconvened on occasion to celebrate the musical legacy of Sourwood Honey, and Chris Conner, the only way they know how–by playing the band’s music for fans old and new. * Show is 21+. Attendees under 21 must be accompanied by a parent & will be subject to a $5 surcharge. The surcharge must be paid in cash at the door on the day of the event.
