Description

Adopting unwanted Hermit Crabs. I know they looked fun while at the beach but once home the fun wears off when the amount of work and care required becomes the reality and the kids lose interest. Hermit crabs require a warm NOT HOT humid environment. They need a sand soil substrate mixture that is at least 3 to 4 times deep as the largest crab. They need this to bury themselves when it becomes time to molt. The substrate needs to be moist not wet. Hermit crabs can't breathe without proper humidity. Leaving them in the wire cage you bought at the beach will only insure a slow painful death for the crab. Heat lights are required to maintain temperature. Two water dishes are required, dechlorinated fresh water and dechlorinated salt water. Yes, they drink both. A high-quality diet is also needed. The stuff you got at the beach is not a quality food. A variety of quality foods should be offered. Each crab requires 2 to 3 shells that vary in size going up in size for them to swap into. A hiding place for them allows for them to feel more secure and less stressed. Although they are called hermit crabs they are not hermits and live in groups or colonies. A single crab will not do well at all. I will take any unwanted crabs that you no longer can care for and want to see have a better life with no questions asked. I have a 40-gallon habitat with all of the above and more! Pictures provided upon request.
