Located west of Burgundy and just east of the Swiss border, Jura sits in the foothills of the Alps. This geologically rich region gives its name to the jurassic period, and though wine growing here is not quite that old, it is a region with a deep viticultural tradition, yet the splendor of Jura has only recently come to the attention of many outsiders. Its semi-mountainous landscapes result in a cooler growing region, producing wines with finesse and elegance like Burgundy with more rustic charm. In fact, Jura shares grapes with Burgundy; Pinot Noir and Chardonnay often feature, along with native varietals like Poulard, Trousseau, and Savagnin.
In this class, our own wine expert, Anita Bender, will take you on a journey through Jura, exploring the grapes, places, and styles of wine produced there. You will taste a range of reds and whites, and learn just what makes Jura such a special region.
