Elizabeth LaPrelle & Brian Dolphin: Elizabeth LaPrelle is a scholar and singer of Appalachian Ballads from Rural Retreat, Virginia. She built her style and repertoire from mentors like Ginny Hawker and Sheila Kay Adams, research into archival recordings, and family and friends. She received her undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary with a major in Southern Appalachian Traditional Performance, and now tours the US regularly both performing and teaching. She’s also a banjo-player, and a visual and interdisciplinary artist. She lives with her husband Brian Dolphin and their young son. Brian Dolphin is a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, Fulbright recipient, and doctoral student of Ethnomusicology at the CUNY Graduate Center. He has studied folk music, lived with indigenous musicians, and performed all over the world. He leads an active life as a songwriter, performer, producer, and songleader, uniting diverse communities through the Ukrainian Village Voices choir and the “Dolphin & You” Community Sing and Patreon. He’s also in a sweet freak-folk band named Doran that just released its first album; it has been getting good press on Pitchfork, NPR, The Guardian, Bandcamp, Record Crates United, and Raven Sings the Blues! Since 2019, Brian has been channeling most of his musical energies through the “Dolphin & You” Patreon, where every month, he releases his own music and that of other great, up-and-coming singer-songwriters who would otherwise go unrecorded and unheard. He also makes harmony part-recordings of folk songs each month, often with his friends. Jesse Sheppard/Jesse Sparhawk Duo: Jesse Sheppard (acoustic 12 string guitar) and Jesse Sparhawk (harps) are musicians in the Philadelphia area who play in a variety of contexts. Perhaps best known for the groups Elkhorn (Sheppard) & Fern Knight (Sparhawk) tonight the duo will perform a series of musical explorations for strings.
