Description
Have you ever thought about enrolling your canine companion in a dog sport? With so many sports to choose from, it can be difficult to narrow down your options, especially if you aren’t sure which skill your dog may enjoy learning. Scent Detection is one option you might wish to consider! A fun and challenging dog sport which is growing in popularity among dog owners in the United States, Scent Detection can be trained for fun, for competition or for helping others. One of the main benefits of Scent Work is its accessibility – virtually any dog (regardless of age, size or breed) can participate. There are undoubtedly some dog sports which require a lot of physical exertion. As one example, search and rescue training can involve dogs running for miles through uneven terrain. Although other dog sports are great for active dogs, they may not be ideal for older dogs, or those who may have suffered from injuries which limit their movement. Scent Detection is different. This sport is accessible to all dogs, regardless of their size, age, breed or physical ability. This sport is all about the dog’s nose, and doesn’t involve sprinting or jumping over obstacles. Your dog can work at their own speed as they seek out the hidden odor. Even blind dogs or deaf dogs can participate in Scent Detection! • Canines’ olfactory systems are roughly 10,000–100,000 times more sensitive than the human olfactory system. • Their noses are capable of detecting odor concentrations at 1–2 parts/trillion. • Canines can be trained to detect arson accelerants, currency, drugs, explosives, human scent, cadavers, digital devices, epilepsy, illegal agricultural products, COVID and other disease vectors, mold, fungi, and viruses. We even train dogs to find lost pets! • An experienced detector dog can be trained to a new scent within a month. An inexperienced dog needs approximately four to six months of training in the procedures of detection to be considered proficient to a particular scent. Scent Detection is an area which allows your dog to harness their innate sense of smell to detect odors. Using the same approach as medical alert service dogs, Scent Detection teaches your dog how to identify a variety of odors in several applications. Dogs use their natural ability to smell to find the odors and are taught to indicate to their handler when they have found one. Once your dog has been imprinted on the target odors and you get into the habit of practicing regularly, you’ll be amazed at its skill in locating the hides. Although it is solely the dog’s job to locate the odor, Scent Work is a team sport. As a handler, your role is important too. You’ll be the one who helps to build a reliable indication and reward when your dog has found the odor. Come train with us and learn the fine art of the dog’s nose. Classes are held 4 times a week for an hour each lesson. You can pay as you go because we understand that not all dogs want to work and neither do all humans. Each individual lesson is $30. You can also buy packages of 4, 6 or 8 lessons ($110, $160 or $225 respectively). Classes: Pet Detective – Finding Lost Pets Saturday’s at 9 am Bio Detection (Odors that are biological like cancer, mold, kidney disease) Saturday’s at 6 pm Classes begin at our new location in Hudson on August 20th. **Discount offered for prepay**
