Description

By her own admission, Lesia is not a politician. Rather, she will offer a first-hand account of the what her family and friends are enduring, how the Ukrainian people are fighting to safeguard their country and identity, and how her long-standing work to showcase and safeguard Ukrainian traditions takes on even more vital resonance. A participant in the 2022 International Folk Art Market | Santa Fe, Lesia represents the Pokuttya Folk Art Cooperative. The cooperative preserves traditional artistic hand-making methods and styles of the Pokuttya region in southwestern Ukraine via their creation of delicate embroidered garments, pysanky eggs, and golden icon paintings. Please join us for an intimate discussion with Lesia as we learn more about the impacts of the war on her community, how the people of Ukraine are attempting to preserve their families and livelihoods, and how the creation of traditional art in the face of aggression becomes an act of civic resistance. A collection of work by the Pokuttya Folk Art Cooperative will be on sale following the discussions. All proceeds go to the Cooperative for the perpetuation of its members and art.
