These community dialogues are connected to the Civil Rights Center’s traveling exhibit, Justice for All: South Carolina and the American Civil Rights Movement. By working with the Collaborative on Race and the South Carolina Human Affairs Commission, we aim to bring together diverse groups across Columbia and Richland County to identify places for growth and healing. We will be connecting the history and legacies of the Civil Rights Movement and the backlash against it to ongoing issues in our communities. This two-part series aims to bring people from Richland County together to discuss issues relating to equality and justice and to work to build on the foundations laid during the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement in South Carolina has left many legacies—such as increased access to voting and education—and laid the foundation for future progress. Backlash and retaliation to civil rights have also left marks on communities throughout South Carolina. By drawing connections between topics like justice, education, economics, voting, retaliation, activism, and allyship in the past and in the present, the dialogues aim to encourage growth and healing within communities and to equip participants to help facilitate this. Before coming to this event, please take a little time and watch a documentary, listen to a podcast, or read an article that provides background on the Civil Rights Movement and its struggles, successes, and legacies. "Justice for All" is supported by Williams, South Carolina Humanities, and Central Carolina Community Foundation, curated by the University of South Carolina Center for Civil Rights History and Research, and based on a previous exhibit co-curated by the Center for Civil Rights History and Research and University of South Carolina Libraries.
