Description

Join us for an evening with author Tim Mulherin as he presents the origins and main themes of his book, "Sand, Stars, Wind, & Water: Field Notes from Up North." Detailing an enduring best friendship and his outdoor adventures in the region from the past 35 years, Tim shares his love for our northern Michigan area through pieces that represent what being "Up North" is all about. His talk will also cover the increasing interest in and pressure on northern Michigan from visitors and how to respect this great national treasure and the people who call it home. Tim will be on hand after the talk to sign copies of his book. (Available for purchase at the event.) About the Instructor Tim Mulherin first visited northwest lower Michigan’s Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties in 1986, and hasn’t been the same since. Meanwhile, he’s been writing about his adventures throughout northern Michigan, resulting in a nonfiction collection of essays and stories entitled "Sand, Stars, Wind, & Water: Field Notes from Up North." Mulherin is currently researching a new book about the impact of pandemic and climate “refugees” and increasing tourism on northern Michigan. A central aspect of his research involves exploring the tension between environmental protection/preservation of this beautiful region and its economic and population growth, and how to strike the best balance for all concerned.  He earned a bachelor of arts degree in English, with a concentration in nonfiction writing, from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He went on to obtain a master of arts degree in journalism from IUPUI and a master of science in management degree from Indiana Wesleyan University. He also taught for a decade in IUPUI’s Department of English. In September of 2021, Mulherin retired from his position as Chief Executive Officer of Irvington Community School, Inc., one of Indiana’s oldest and largest K-12 public charter schools, located on the east side of Indianapolis. He and his wife have owned a cottage in the village of Cedar for the past 12 years, and before that, shared a cabin with another couple on Spider Lake. With his retirement from public service, he has now finally come home.
